Campfire

What is a Campfire?

A Campfire is a decorative light source and cooking block in Minecraft that emits smoke particles and provides a cozy atmosphere. It can be used to cook food, create smoke signals, and prevent hostile mob spawning, making it a versatile survival tool for players in both early and late-game gameplay.

Where Can Campfires Be Found?

Campfires naturally generate in Taiga Villages, usually found near houses or as part of the village center, where they serve as community gathering spots. Players can also craft a Campfire using three Logs or Wood, three Sticks, and one piece of Coal or Charcoal, making it a cheap and accessible light source.

A special variant, the Soul Campfire, can be crafted by replacing the Coal or Charcoal with Soul Sand or Soul Soil, producing a blue flame that repels Piglins and adds a mystical aesthetic.

What Can Players Do with a Campfire?

Campfires have multiple uses, making them a valuable tool for survival, decoration, and Redstone contraptions. Players can use them to:

  • Cook food by placing up to four raw food items on top, which automatically cook over time without requiring fuel.
  • Create a smoke signal, as the smoke particles rise high into the sky, making Campfires useful for marking important locations or guiding players home. Placing Hay Bales underneath a Campfire increases the smoke’s height, making it visible from even farther away.
  • Provide lighting and prevent mob spawning, as Campfires emit a light level of 15, keeping hostile mobs from spawning nearby.
  • Act as a safe fireplace, as Campfires do not spread fire, making them a safer alternative to Netherrack flames for indoor builds.
  • Harvest Honey from Bee Nests, as Campfires placed under Bee Nests calm the Bees, preventing them from attacking when players collect Honeycombs or Honey Bottles.

Campfires can also be extinguished with a Water Bucket or a Shovel, allowing players to relight them later when needed.

The History of Campfires in Minecraft

Campfires were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.14, as part of the “Village & Pillage” update, bringing new survival mechanics, villager improvements, and decorative features. Later updates added Soul Campfires and increased smoke height mechanics, making them even more useful for exploration and base-building.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

Campfires in Minecraft function similarly to real-world campfires, which have been used for thousands of years for cooking, warmth, and signaling. The ability to increase smoke height using Hay Bales mirrors how ancient civilizations and survivalists used damp materials to create noticeable smoke signals, much like how Minecraft players use Campfires for navigation and base marking.
