Frosted Ice

What is Frosted Ice?

Frosted Ice is a temporary, translucent ice block in Minecraft that appears when a player walks on water using Frost Walker-enchanted boots. Unlike regular Ice or Packed Ice, Frosted Ice gradually melts over time, disappearing and turning back into water. It is mainly used for walking over water without sinking, making it useful for quick travel across oceans, lakes, and rivers.

Frosted Ice has a cloudy, cracked texture, distinguishing it from normal ice blocks.

Where Can Frosted Ice Be Found?

Frosted Ice does not generate naturally and can only be created when a player wears Frost Walker-enchanted boots and walks over water. The ice forms directly beneath the player’s feet, creating a temporary frozen path.

  • Frost Walker I creates a smaller radius of Frosted Ice.
  • Frost Walker II creates a larger radius, allowing players to run across larger bodies of water.

Frosted Ice cannot be obtained in Survival Mode, but players in Creative Mode can place it using the command:

/setblock ~ ~ ~ frosted_ice

However, Frosted Ice will still melt over time, even when placed manually.

What Can Players Do with Frosted Ice?

Frosted Ice is not a permanent block, but it has several useful applications:

  • Water Walking – Players can walk on water without needing boats or bridges.
  • Quick Transportation – Since ice allows for faster movement, Frost Walker boots can help speed up ocean crossings.
  • Traps and Puzzle Mechanics – Adventure map creators use Frosted Ice for temporary pathways that disappear.
  • Preventing Drowning – Since Frost Walker instantly freezes water beneath the player, it can be useful for escaping water hazards.

Unlike regular Ice or Packed Ice, Frosted Ice cannot be collected with Silk Touch and will always melt after a short time.

The History of Frosted Ice in Minecraft

Frosted Ice was introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.9 (Combat Update) alongside the Frost Walker enchantment. This update added new combat mechanics, shields, and improved enchantments, including Frost Walker, which allowed players to freeze water while walking.

Unlike other ice blocks, Frosted Ice was designed to prevent permanent freezing of water, making it a temporary effect rather than a building material.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

Frosted Ice in Minecraft is inspired by real-world ice formation on lakes and rivers. In extremely cold temperatures, thin layers of ice can form on water surfaces but quickly break when walked on. Additionally, the cracked, cloudy appearance of Frosted Ice is similar to thin ice in nature, which is fragile and unsafe to walk on.
