Blue Ice

What is Blue Ice?

Blue Ice is a solid, slippery block in Minecraft that is even more slippery than Packed Ice and does not melt under light sources. It is primarily used for high-speed ice highways, item transport systems, and decorative builds. Due to its smooth, glassy appearance, Blue Ice is also a popular choice for futuristic and frozen-themed structures.

Where Can Blue Ice Be Found?

Blue Ice naturally generates in Frozen Oceans, Icebergs, and Ice Spikes biomes, forming compact frozen structures. It is most commonly found in large icebergs, making these biomes the best locations for harvesting it. Players can also craft Blue Ice using nine Packed Ice blocks, making it obtainable even if a Frozen Ocean biome is not nearby.

To collect Blue Ice directly, players must mine it using a Silk Touch tool. Without Silk Touch, Blue Ice breaks and does not drop anything, requiring careful harvesting.

What Can Players Do with Blue Ice?

Blue Ice is primarily used for fast transportation. Boats traveling on Blue Ice move even faster than on Packed Ice, making it the best material for Nether ice highways, where players can travel thousands of blocks in seconds.

It is also commonly used in automatic item transport systems because its slippery surface allows items to slide much further than on other blocks. This makes it a key component in high-efficiency sorting systems and mob farms.

Since Blue Ice does not melt, it is useful in permanent frozen builds, Arctic-style bases, and Redstone contraptions where ice needs to remain stable. Unlike regular Ice and Packed Ice, it does not turn into water when broken, making it more reliable for complex builds.

The History of Blue Ice in Minecraft

Blue Ice was introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.13, as part of the “Update Aquatic.” This update expanded ocean biomes, adding icebergs, new underwater mechanics, and improved frozen environments, making Blue Ice a renewable and useful block for transportation and decoration.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

Blue Ice in Minecraft is inspired by real-world glacial ice, which appears deep blue due to the way it absorbs and scatters light. In nature, compressed glacier ice becomes denser over time, removing air bubbles and creating a more transparent, blue-tinted structure, much like the crafting process of Blue Ice in Minecraft.
