Wall Torch

What is a Wall Torch?

A Wall Torch is a wall-mounted version of the standard Torch in Minecraft. It provides light and prevents hostile mobs from spawning, making it one of the most commonly used light sources in the game. Unlike standing Torches, which are placed on the ground or blocks, Wall Torches attach to vertical surfaces, making them ideal for interior lighting, caves, and Redstone contraptions.

Wall Torches emit a light level of 14, slightly less than Lanterns (15) but brighter than Soul Torches (10).

Where Can Wall Torches Be Found?

Wall Torches naturally generate in various structures, including:

  • Villages (inside houses and streetlights)
  • Strongholds (lighting up corridors and libraries)
  • Mineshafts (attached to wooden supports)
  • Woodland Mansions (inside rooms and hallways)

Players can also craft Wall Torches manually by:

  1. Crafting a Torch – Using one Stick and one Coal or Charcoal in a Crafting Table.
  2. Placing the Torch on a vertical surface – This converts it into a Wall Torch automatically.

Wall Torches can be broken instantly and will drop as a regular Torch when mined.

What Can Players Do with Wall Torches?

Wall Torches are primarily used for lighting and mob prevention, but they also have other applications:

  • Cave Exploration – Prevents mobs from spawning in dark areas.
  • Interior Lighting – Saves space compared to ground-placed torches.
  • Hidden Redstone Activation – Wall Torches can be used in Redstone contraptions when paired with Item Frames and Comparators.
  • Decorative Builds – Can be placed on walls to create realistic medieval lighting in castles, dungeons, and homes.

Unlike Lanterns or Glowstone, Wall Torches do not require chains or support blocks, making them one of the most convenient light sources in the game.

The History of Wall Torches in Minecraft

Torches were introduced in Minecraft Classic and have remained a core survival tool ever since. Wall-mounted Torches were implemented early in Minecraft Java Edition Infdev, allowing players to light up walls instead of only placing torches on the ground.

Over time, alternative light sources like Lanterns, Glowstone, and Candles were added, but Wall Torches remain one of the most widely used light sources due to their simplicity and ease of use.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

Torches in Minecraft are inspired by real-world medieval torches, which were used for illumination before electric lighting existed. In ancient times, torches were made from wood soaked in resin or oil, allowing them to burn for extended periods—similar to how Minecraft’s Wall Torches burn indefinitely without needing fuel.
