End Rod

What is an End Rod?

An End Rod is a light-emitting block in Minecraft that produces a soft, white glow. It has a thin, pillar-like shape with a purple crystal tip, making it a unique lighting source often used in End-themed builds, modern architecture, and decorative structures. Unlike torches or lanterns, End Rods emit particles and do not require support from walls or ceilings, allowing for floating or free-standing placements.

Where Can End Rods Be Found?

End Rods naturally generate in End Cities, where they decorate the outer edges of End Ships and End City structures. Players can also craft End Rods by combining one Blaze Rod and one Popped Chorus Fruit in a Crafting Table. Since Blaze Rods come from Blazes in the Nether and Popped Chorus Fruit is made by smelting Chorus Fruit, End Rods require both End and Nether resources to craft.

End Rods can be mined instantly with any tool or by hand, making them easy to collect and reuse.

What Can Players Do with End Rods?

End Rods are primarily used as decorative lighting, emitting the same light level as torches (level 14) but with a sleeker, futuristic look. Unlike torches, End Rods do not need to be attached to walls and can be placed vertically or horizontally, allowing for more creative placement options. They are often used for streetlights, chandeliers, modern interiors, and sci-fi builds.

When placed in a stacked formation, End Rods create a pillar effect, resembling columns or support beams. Players also use them as candle-like decorations, spaceship exhaust effects, or magical floating lights. Since End Rods are not affected by gravity, they remain suspended when placed in midair, making them great for floating structures and fantasy-themed builds.

Unlike other light sources like Glowstone or Lanterns, End Rods cannot be turned off or powered with Redstone.

The History of End Rods in Minecraft

End Rods were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.9, as part of the “Combat Update.” This update expanded the End dimension, introducing End Cities, End Ships, and Shulker mobs, with End Rods acting as both a decoration and a natural light source in these structures.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

End Rods resemble real-world fluorescent lights, glow sticks, and magical staffs. Their soft, white glow and sleek design make them similar to modern LED tube lighting, often used in futuristic architecture and sci-fi environments. Their fantasy-like glowing effect also mirrors magical wands and enchanted crystals seen in mythology and fantasy literature.
