End Portal Frame

What is an End Portal Frame?

An End Portal Frame is a special block used to create End Portals, allowing players to access the End dimension in Minecraft. It has a green and beige texture with a recessed slot, where an Eye of Ender must be placed to activate the portal. End Portal Frames are one of the few unbreakable blocks in Survival mode and are only found in Strongholds.

Where Can End Portal Frames Be Found?

End Portal Frames do not generate naturally in the Overworld except in Stronghold portal rooms. These rooms contain 12 End Portal Frames arranged in a 3×3 ring, though some portals generate with missing frames. Each frame must be filled with an Eye of Ender to activate the portal.

Unlike most blocks, End Portal Frames cannot be mined or obtained in Survival mode. In Creative mode, players can access them from the Creative inventory. In Java Edition, they can be placed freely, but in Bedrock Edition, they only function if arranged in the correct portal formation.

What Can Players Do with End Portal Frames?

End Portal Frames serve one purpose: activating an End Portal. Once a player places 12 Eyes of Ender into the frame slots, the portal activates, creating a black void-like surface that teleports players to the End upon contact. Since End Portal Frames cannot be moved or crafted, players must locate a Stronghold using Eyes of Ender to reach the End dimension.

While they are unbreakable in Survival mode, they can be destroyed using commands or a pick block in Creative mode. In Bedrock Edition, End Portal Frames have a unique hitbox, meaning players can stand slightly inside them without falling through.

The History of End Portal Frames in Minecraft

End Portal Frames were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3, as part of the Adventure Update. This update added Strongholds, End Portals, and the Ender Dragon, allowing players to complete Minecraft’s main storyline for the first time.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

The End Portal Frame resembles mystical gateways and ancient ruins found in mythology and fantasy. Its eye-like design and magical activation method are inspired by arcane rituals and interdimensional travel themes seen in many fantasy games and literature. The concept of traveling to a mysterious floating island realm, like the End, reflects ideas from legendary lost lands such as Atlantis or the heavens in ancient mythology.
