Grindstone

What is a Grindstone?

A Grindstone is a utility block in Minecraft that allows players to repair tools and weapons, remove enchantments, and reset item durability penalties. It is commonly used in villages, survival bases, and XP farms, making it a valuable tool for gear maintenance and enchantment management.

Where Can Grindstones Be Found?

Grindstones naturally generate in villages with Weaponsmith Villagers, usually found inside blacksmith houses. Players can also craft a Grindstone using two Sticks, two Wooden Planks of any type, and one Stone Slab, placing the Slab in the center, Planks on either side, and Sticks above them inside a Crafting Table.

Since the materials required for crafting a Grindstone are common and easily obtainable, players can build one early in the game to manage their tools and enchantments effectively.

What Can Players Do with a Grindstone?

The main function of a Grindstone is repairing tools, weapons, and armor. When two damaged items of the same type are placed inside the Grindstone, they combine durability, producing a repaired item with extra durability points. This process does not require experience points, making it a free alternative to the Anvil for simple repairs.

A Grindstone also removes all enchantments from an item, except for Curses (Curse of Vanishing and Curse of Binding). This feature allows players to clear unwanted enchantments and gain a small amount of experience in return. It is particularly useful when recycling enchanted loot from fishing, trading, or mob drops.

The Grindstone is also a Weaponsmith Villager’s job site block, meaning that placing one near an Unemployed Villager will convert them into a Weaponsmith, allowing players to trade for enchanted weapons, iron tools, and other valuable items.

The History of Grindstones in Minecraft

Grindstones were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.14, as part of the “Village & Pillage” update. This update overhauled villages and professions, adding new job site blocks like the Loom, Blast Furnace, and Grindstone, improving Villager trading and crafting mechanics.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

The Grindstone is inspired by real-world grinding wheels, which have been used for centuries to sharpen tools, weapons, and cutlery. Blacksmiths and craftsmen historically used hand-cranked grindstones to restore and maintain the sharpness of metal blades, much like how Minecraft players use the Grindstone to repair and manage their weapons.
