Obsidian

What is Obsidian?

Obsidian is one of the strongest and most blast-resistant blocks in Minecraft. It is primarily used to construct Nether Portals, Ender Chests, and Enchanting Tables. It has a dark purple, almost black appearance and can only be mined with a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe. Due to its extreme durability, it is often used in defensive structures and grief-proof builds.

Where Can Obsidian Be Found?

Obsidian is naturally generated when water comes into contact with lava source blocks. This commonly occurs in underground lava pools, as well as in Ruined Portals and certain generated structures. Players can also create Obsidian by manually placing water over lava source blocks. The Nether also contains small amounts of Obsidian in Bastion Remnants. More details about lava mechanics can be found in the Lava article.

What Can Players Do with Obsidian?

Obsidian is mainly used for creating Nether Portals, which allow players to travel between the Overworld and the Nether. It is also used to craft Enchanting Tables, Ender Chests, and the incredibly durable Crying Obsidian variant. Additionally, Obsidian can be used to reinforce bases due to its blast resistance, making it an excellent defense against explosions. More details about portal mechanics can be found in the Nether Portal article.
