End Gateway

What is an End Gateway?

An End Gateway is a portal block in Minecraft that allows players to travel between the main End island and the outer End islands. It appears as a floating, black-and-yellow starry block and generates inside a bedrock frame above the End void.

End Gateways serve as fast-travel portals, helping players explore distant End islands without needing to build long bridges over the dangerous void.

Where Can End Gateways Be Found?

End Gateways do not generate in the Overworld or Nether—they are exclusive to the End dimension. Players can find them in two different locations:

  1. After defeating the Ender Dragon – The first End Gateway appears in the air, above the End island’s obsidian pillars.
  2. At the edges of the outer End islands – After defeating the Ender Dragon multiple times, new End Gateways generate around the island to create more portals.

To enter an End Gateway, players must:

  • Throw an Ender Pearl into the portal block – This teleports the player to an outer End island (usually near an End City).
  • Use Elytra to fly into the portal – This works if players have rockets or momentum to pass through the portal area.

End Gateways cannot be mined or broken, but they will disappear if the bedrock frame is removed using commands or exploits.

What Can Players Do with End Gateways?

End Gateways are primarily used for quick and safe travel between distant End islands, but they also serve creative and technical purposes:

  • Fast travel in the End – Instead of building long bridges over the void, players can use End Gateways to reach End Cities and End Ships faster.
  • Farming Shulkers and Elytra – Since End Cities spawn in the outer End islands, End Gateways help players return to the central End island after looting End Ships.
  • Portal-based builds – Some players design End-themed bases around End Gateways, incorporating them into structures.
  • Creative mode or map-making builds – End Gateway blocks can be placed using commands for custom teleportation setups.

Players cannot create their own End Gateways, but they can spawn the portal block using the following command:

/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:end_gateway

However, this manually placed End Gateway will not teleport players unless its data is modified with commands.

The History of End Gateways in Minecraft

End Gateways were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.9 (Combat Update) as part of the End expansion, which included Elytra, End Cities, and Chorus Plants. Before this update, the End was a small, featureless void with no incentive to explore further. The addition of End Gateways encouraged players to explore the outer End islands, making the End a much larger, adventure-filled dimension.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

The End Gateway’s appearance and function are inspired by wormholes and teleportation theories in science fiction. The idea of portals connecting distant locations in space is a common theme in movies, books, and video games. Its starry black-and-yellow effect also resembles NASA’s depictions of space-time distortions, reinforcing the sci-fi theme of the End dimension.
