Underwater Torch

What is an Underwater Torch?

An Underwater Torch is a special light source exclusive to Minecraft Education Edition and Bedrock Edition with Education features enabled. Unlike regular Torches, which break when placed underwater, the Underwater Torch remains lit and functions normally in water, making it useful for underwater exploration, ocean bases, and submerged mining operations.

This torch is part of Minecraft’s Chemistry system and cannot be crafted in standard Survival Mode unless Education features are enabled.

Where Can Underwater Torches Be Found?

Underwater Torches do not generate naturally and must be crafted using Minecraft’s Chemistry system. To craft one, players need:

  1. Magnesium (Mg) – Obtained from the Element Constructor.

  2. Standard Torch – Crafted from one Stick and one Coal or Charcoal.

When combined in the Lab Table, these materials produce an Underwater Torch.

What Can Players Do with an Underwater Torch?

The Underwater Torch provides permanent lighting underwater, making it useful for:

  • Lighting up ocean bases, where regular torches would be extinguished.

  • Illuminating underwater tunnels and mining shafts, making deep-sea exploration easier.

  • Building submerged Redstone contraptions, as Underwater Torches provide visibility in water.

  • Educational chemistry lessons, where students learn how magnesium burns underwater.

Unlike Sea Pickles, Glowstone, and Lanterns, which also work underwater, Underwater Torches behave just like regular Torches but without being extinguished by water.

The History of Underwater Torches in Minecraft

Underwater Torches were introduced as part of Minecraft Education Edition’s Chemistry Update, allowing players to experiment with real-world chemical properties. While Glowstone, Sea Lanterns, and Conduits have provided underwater lighting in past updates, the Underwater Torch is unique because it mimics real-world waterproof flames.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

Underwater Torches are inspired by real-world underwater flares, which are used in deep-sea diving, marine construction, and emergency rescue operations. These flares burn using magnesium, a chemical that produces a bright, white flame even when submerged in water—just like Minecraft’s Underwater Torch.
