Dragon Wall Head

What is a Dragon Wall Head?

A Dragon Wall Head is a decorative block in Minecraft that features the severed head of the Ender Dragon, mounted on a wall. It is the largest and rarest mob head in the game, displaying the Ender Dragon’s iconic black scales, glowing purple eyes, and fearsome jaw. Unlike other mob heads, the Dragon Head has an animated jaw that opens and closes when powered by Redstone, making it one of the most interactive decorations in Minecraft.

When placed on a wall, the Dragon Wall Head faces outward, just like other wall-mounted mob heads, such as the Zombie Wall Head or Creeper Wall Head.

Where Can Dragon Wall Heads Be Found?

Dragon Wall Heads do not generate naturally and must be collected by players. To obtain one:

  1. Defeat the Ender Dragon – However, the Dragon Head does not drop from the dragon itself.
  2. Travel to an End Ship in an End City – The Dragon Head is found at the front of the End Ship.
  3. Carefully mine the Dragon Head – It is attached to the bow of the ship, often hanging over the void. Players should use building blocks or Elytra to safely collect it.

Once collected, placing the Dragon Head on a wall converts it into a Dragon Wall Head.

What Can Players Do with a Dragon Wall Head?

The Dragon Wall Head is a prestige decoration, often displayed as a trophy for defeating the Ender Dragon. It can be used for:

  • End-themed bases and shrines, fitting the aesthetic of End Stone and Purpur Blocks.
  • Trophy rooms, showing off achievements from End exploration.
  • Redstone-powered decorations, as the head’s mouth opens and closes when activated.
  • Secret doors and traps, where the jaw animation adds movement to a hidden entrance.

Like other mob heads, placing the Dragon Head on a Note Block produces a deep roar-like sound, adding to its intimidating presence.

The History of Dragon Wall Heads in Minecraft

Dragon Heads were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.9 (Combat Update) alongside End Cities, End Ships, and Elytra. While most mob heads drop from their respective mobs, the Dragon Head is unique in that it must be found in the End rather than looted from a defeated Ender Dragon.

Its Redstone-powered mouth animation was also a first for mob heads, making it a favorite among builders and Redstone engineers.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

The Dragon Wall Head is inspired by the trophy heads of mythical dragons seen in fantasy stories, castles, and medieval legends. Many cultures have myths about dragon hunters displaying severed dragon heads as symbols of victory. Additionally, the jaw animation mirrors how real-world mounted animal heads in hunting lodges sometimes have mechanical moving parts for display purposes.
