Water Cauldron

What is a Water Cauldron?

A Water Cauldron is a Cauldron filled with water, serving as a storage block for water in Minecraft. Unlike a regular Water Source Block, a Water Cauldron can hold only a limited amount of water, but it offers unique mechanics, such as filling bottles, dyeing leather armor, and extinguishing fire or lava-based items.

In Bedrock Edition, Water Cauldrons can also collect rainwater, making them a renewable water source in rainy biomes.

Where Can Water Cauldrons Be Found?

Water Cauldrons can naturally generate in certain structures, including:

  • Igloos – Found in snowy biomes.
  • Villages – Inside Tanner houses, where they are used for leatherworking.
  • Woodland Mansions – Occasionally generate in hidden rooms.

Players can also create a Water Cauldron by:

  1. Crafting a Cauldron – Using 7 Iron Ingots in a U-shape in a Crafting Table.
  2. Right-clicking the Cauldron with a Water Bucket – This fills the Cauldron with water.
  3. Waiting for rain (Bedrock Edition only) – If placed outdoors, an empty Cauldron will gradually fill when it rains.

What Can Players Do with Water Cauldrons?

Water Cauldrons have several unique mechanics that make them useful for:

  • Filling Glass Bottles – Players can extract water using a Glass Bottle, which is required for brewing potions.
  • Dyeing Leather Armor – Water Cauldrons can be used to remove dye from leather armor in Bedrock Edition.
  • Extinguishing Items – A Water Cauldron can be used to extinguish burning items, such as Shulkers, Campfires, and players in Bedrock Edition.
  • Redstone Detection – A Comparator detects the water level in a Cauldron, allowing for Redstone contraptions.
  • Snow Collection – In Bedrock Edition, a Water Cauldron placed in a snowy biome can gradually fill with Powder Snow.

Unlike regular Water Source Blocks, Water Cauldrons do not create infinite water and must be refilled manually.

The History of Water Cauldrons in Minecraft

Cauldrons were introduced in Minecraft Java Edition Beta 1.9 (Adventure Update), originally designed to store water for brewing potions. Over time, updates expanded their functionality, including armor dyeing, fire extinguishing, and Powder Snow collection in later versions.

In Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Water Cauldrons became more interactive, allowing them to collect rainwater and extinguish entities, making them more useful for survival gameplay.

Interesting Fact or Real-Life Connection

Water Cauldrons in Minecraft resemble medieval water basins or alchemist’s cauldrons, which were used for brewing, dyeing, and metalworking. In real life, rainwater collection systems operate similarly to Bedrock Edition’s Cauldron rain mechanic, where open containers gradually fill over time.
